A Look Inside the Svalbard Seed Vault

Take a look inside the Svalbard vault, that stores almost a million precious seed samples from countries all over the world.

The seed vault was built to protect global crops in a secure and efficient way. As it’s built 120m into a frozen mountain, it allows the vault to maintain a temperature below zero all year round without using electricity.

In the event of a regional crisis, such as a natural disaster or war, countries may need to replenish crops that were destroyed. Although the seed vault only opened in 2008, it has already had its first withdrawal due to the war in Syria.

It is completely free to store seeds in the vault and all countries around the world are welcome.
