Visual flash cards to help children explore their creative writing skills.
Our set of printable cards list 32 different genres of literature. They can be used in a variety of ways to help children learn about different writing topics and to inspire their own ideas.
For example:
- You might read the cards together with your students and discuss the different genres. Talk about the characteristics of each one, and share examples of books that fall into that genre.
- Use the cards as creative writing prompts. Ask your class to write a short story (BBC’s 500 Words competition?) in a particular genre.
- Create relevant book titles. Pick a genre and ask your class to come up with book titles that might fit the category.
- Organise a classroom library. Display the cards as part of a visual system for helping children choose a book.
